IVF in Spain: real costs, success rates and how to get reimbursed by French health insurance

What IVF in Spain actually costs for French women

The first question every French woman asks before considering IVF in Spain is: how much will this really cost me? Here are the real numbers, without rounding.

A standard IVF-ICSI cycle in Spain (from first consultation to embryo transfer) costs between €4,500 and €6,500 depending on the clinic. IVF with egg donation runs €6,000 to €9,000. Stimulation medication adds €800 to €1,200 and can be purchased in France with a French prescription — which means it's partially reimbursed by your CPAM. Travel costs typically amount to one round trip of €100 to €300.

What CPAM reimburses: the French social security system covers IVF cycles performed in EU countries, including Spain, up to the French reimbursement tariff. For a standard IVF cycle, this amounts to approximately €1,970 per retrieval cycle. The reimbursement applies to up to 4 IVF cycles per live birth — the same quota as in France. To access this reimbursement, you must obtain a prior authorisation form (formulaire S2) from your CPAM before starting treatment abroad.

Success rates in Spanish clinics: what the data shows

Spanish IVF clinics are required to report their results annually to the SEF (Sociedad Española de Fertilidad), which publishes national statistics. For IVF-ICSI with own eggs: approximately 35% pregnancy rate per transfer nationally, rising to 45-50% for women under 35. For IVF with egg donation: approximately 57% pregnancy rate per transfer, largely independent of the recipient's age. For IVF + PGT-A (genetic embryo testing) in women over 40: approximately 52.5% per transfer.

One important caveat: always ask for pregnancy rates broken down by age group and protocol type — not global rates that average across all patients. A 55% headline rate calculated mostly on young women with donor eggs says very little about your specific situation.

How to get started without wasting time

The fastest path starts with a fertility workup: AMH blood test, antral follicle count (AFC) ultrasound, and basic hormone panel (FSH, LH, estradiol on day 2-3 of your cycle). Having these results in hand before your first clinic consultation saves 4 to 8 weeks. WoMA can help you get your workup done in France and interpret the results before connecting you with the right clinic in Spain.

At WoMA, we believe transparency about costs is the foundation of good decision-making. No one should discover unexpected fees mid-treatment. We provide detailed, itemised quotes before you commit to anything.
